BLOG #12 – FINAL BLOG

My parting words to you all:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out & loudly proclaiming ‘WOW! What a ride’!"

This epitaph is on my Dad’s gravestone and I live by it because life is just too short to not do all of the awesome things you have your heart set on doing. (CARPE DIEM is my second favorite motto..)

Reflect back on this semester.

*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?
i lost all my friends once college came, we all rarely talk. so i really haven't rekindled any old friendships. i did make a friendship with a person who i hope we still can crack the same jokes once next semester comes around.

*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?
academically-i turned out that it is really hard for me to study and do good in college. my grades in highschool were amazing. my grades from fall semester aren't really that good. personally- i became less shy and now know how to approach people and make new friends.

*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?
the hula dancing is my favorite memory.

*How will you live your life to the fullest?
do the things that i have been wanting to do for a long time and do things that i would have never tried.

A parting quote from Fast Food Nation:

“Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food..Pull open the glass door, feel the rush of cool air, walk inside, get in line, and look around you, look at the kids working in the kitchen, at the customers in their seats, at the ads for the latest toys, study the backlit color photographs above the counter, think about where the food came from, about how and where it was made, about what is set in motion by every single fast food purchase, the ripple effect near and far, think about it. Then place your order. Or turn and walk out the door. It’s not too late. Even in this fast food nation, you can still have it your way.” (Schlosser, 270)

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey

1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?
before you speak, think about what you are going to say in order for people to understand what you are saying better. if you don't think before you say something, it will all come out really fast and not make sense and the people you are talking to will not understand.

2) (Refer to page 380 of the text):
Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.
i am a withholder because i do not like to deal with things. if someone is yelling at me i get really angry and dont want to deal with them so i just walk away from them or leave the room.

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"
-sometimes i really do not turn to people when i am stressed, but when i do its either my mom, my brothers girlfriend or my friends. My brothers girlfriend and my friends know what i am going through since they are all also in college. I sometimes also turn to my brother since we are close. All of them give me encouragement and help me to figure what i can do to reduce my stress or we find something else to talk about to relieve my stress. I like talking about something else when i am stressed because then i can forget about what is making me stressed. I love to hear jokes and laugh because i feel better.

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.
-i am most stressed that i have so much homework to do that im falling behind in, and my grades are low and im stressing because my next exams and quizzes i need to do super good in to do better. Im falling behind in homework because when it comes time to do homework, i decide to clean or go hang out with friends, which i need to stop now so i can catch up and finish with good grades. My body is sooooo tired and i just want to sleep everyday because i have been stressed and staying up late (with friends) and trying to do homework. My plan is to do my homework right when i get home, eat, clean, then finish homework and get to bed early. Friends can wait until the weekend.

2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8.

You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants.

-Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it look like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)
*looks like-big building with a lot of machinery
*going on-many people, illegal immigrants, doing there job quickly and dangerously
*people acting- they are working really fast at their job, not reacting to how dangerous the machine or tools they are working with
*wearing-clothes i normally wear, there is no protective equipment i can wear
*job-taking the meat and slicing them up really fast with sharp knives
-How much $$$ do you earn?
*i only make $1 a day
-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?
*i work 12 hour shifts each day cutting up the meat, and after work i go home to my family and sleep so i can wake up early in the morning to go back to work
-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?
* we live in a little tiny old looking house about an hour away from the factory, and the quality of life is poor, we barley have anything in our home and there is barely no food

from ashleys blog:

-How do you think you have changed acedemically since the beginning of this school year?

i am not doing too well academically. i am not doing really good in human anatomy and its bringing my gpa down, and i might drop it and start fresh next semester. algebra is kind of ehhh and so are my other classes. i am going to try and study hard for the rest of the semester and to bring those grades up.

-Do you believe you are working to your full ablility in all of your classes?
i am not working to my full ability in all of my classes. i wish i would have worked harder in all of my classes at the beginning of the semester because i am struggling to bring my grades up. i really wish i could start all over fresh in my classes, especially human anatomy because i wasted money for that class and have to retake it. but i am going to try my hardest in all of my classes starting... now.

blog #7

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.
"people are going to try and bring you down, be strong"- i don't know how the real one goes, but that is how i say it.

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
-how has college changed your life?
-are you still considering the career you have chosen at the beginning of the semester or are you thinking of something else?

3) What are you passionate about? Why?
i am passionate about my family because i love them so much and they are there for me when i need help and they mean everything to me.

4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.
when i get a job, i am going to have that help pay for it along with student loans, and at the beginning of the semester i figured out it will cost me $40,000 total about, but i am going to wait til next year to apply for the program, so adding 2 more semesters to that will raise that amount.

5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?
i wish that i would have heard their speech at the beginning of the semester because i would have been trying even harder at my classes. i was thinking of doing a different career but i am not really sure just yet. in order to make the cut i am going to need to try wayyyy harder at school and raising my grades up these next weeks before final exams.

6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)

Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:

"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."
i would not like to live or even travel through that town because i would not like that smell at all.

-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
i have not read THE JUNGLE, but how it relates is that workers got hurt at food industries in the book the jungle, just how workers are getting hurt in food packing industries today.

-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?
meat industries have gone through so many employees and packing plants are not seeing this as a problem because they are making money no matter what.

We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:

"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."

-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?
i believe that when the animals are stressed, anger, or scared, it toughens up the meat, because if they are like that when they are getting killed, their muscles are tensed up because they are scared.

-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?
i know you can't really taste them even though it is a little disgusting to think about, but this is not going to change no matter what.

I probably grossed you out - sorry guys, but knowledge is power! If you still don't see the connection between this course and Fast Food Nation -- let me know. Most of you are going into health professions and will be dealing with epidemics of cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.. mostly based on the American sedentary and processed-food lifestyle. I am hoping you are thinking more critically about everything at this point.

2) Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).
For the test-taking/anxiety, i get reallllly nervous when it comes to exam or quiz time.. and I forget right away. For my next exams or quizzes, I'm going to try not let the other people around me bother me. If I see people get done before me, I'm going to try to block them out and realize.. just take your time... and take big deep breaths.

What do you feel this course (UN100) should focus on? What do you need help in, specifically?
I feel UN100 should focus on how to survive college, strategies for how to study better and work on getting good grades, and how to get involve with college. I know it kind of focuses on these things already, but not enough. I find it really hard because there have been many guest speakers coming in, and it doesn't give enough time in class to go over this stuff. Class is only for an hour and 40 minutes, but sometimes the guest speakers go on and on and on, leaving not enough time to go over these things. What I feel I need help in is the habit of studying every night and studying strategies. I have been having a hard time studying because I am still used to my habits I used during high school, where I wait until the night before or the morning of to go over the material before a test. Even though I got kind of good grades in high school doing this, I am seeing it does not work out during college. I am trying the flash card deal, and going over them over and over again, in which I found out helped on my human anatomy quiz in lab. I also wait last minute to do homework, but I am also starting the habit of doing homework every night. Hopefully doing these strategies will help and I hope to see raises in my grades in my classes.

Ø What is your plan to get involved on campus? What are your interests? Will you or have you joined any student organizations? Which two events besides UNITED & Career Major Fair do you plan on attending?
I am going to try and attend some of the things on campus, but it is really hard for me because I am always busy. I might not join any student organizations this year, so I can get used to the college life, but if it is possible to next year, I might. One of the events I might attend is the Deep Muscle Relaxation on November 13 part of the Skill Builders workshop. Also I might do the Hands On Volunteering At the Marquette County Humane Society November 15. I love animals =).

Ø Fast Food Nation - Chapter 6:

Ø What are some of the problems facing cattle ranchers?
Some of the problems cattle ranchers are facing are that land prices are rising, beef prices are poor, more cattle supplies than ever, more and more shipments of cattle from Canada and Mexico, and the beef are producing health scares.

Ø What are “captive supplies” of cattle? (“The four major meatpacking companies now control about 20 percent of the live cattle in the U.S. through ‘captive supplies’” (138). (See also p. 142).
Captive supplies of cattle are cattle that are maintained in in company owned feedlots or are purchased in advance. (pg 138)

Ø What was the impact of the Chicken McNugget on the poultry industry?
Chicken processing company's started making more money and producing more as the McNuggets became more and more popular and as chicken became more in demand.

Ø How does the nutritional value of a McNugget compare to a hamburger?
McNuggets contain twice as much fat per ounce as a hamburger.

Ø How does the suicide rate for ranchers and farmers compare with the rate for U.S. citizens in general? Why?
The suicide rate of ranchers and farmers is three times higher than the rate for U.S. citizens, because of the crisis they faced and they also couldn't make a living anymore of money loss.

Ø Do you feel as if there is any healthy fast food available to consumers? If so, where and why? Give specific examples of products.. Please be honest and support your opinions. For example, I feel that Subway's Veggie Sub is extremely healthy due to its freshly-cut produce, cheese, and fresh-baked breads. I actually talked to a friend who works at Subway and he said in MQT, they slice their own produce. (My fear was that it arrived pre-sliced and filled with preservatives). It's not organic, but it's a start.
I believe there is healthy fast food available to consumers. At Subway, you can order fresh produce. You can look at the nutritional guide, or ask how the produce arrives. At Fazolis, spaghetti is actually good for you.

Ø Describe your ideal Instructor/Professor.
My ideal instructor/professor would have to be one that would have powerpoints as notes. That way they would be easier to copy down and not rush of what they are saying. They would have the easiest quizzes, tests, and exams. They would have to be really cool too to have fun in that class.

Ø “I knew it when I studied it, but I forgot it on the test.” How can students study differently to prevent this from happening?
This usually happens to me a lot, and I believe that in order to remember, is to study everyday, and go over the material many times. Also, right before the test, go over the material, that way it would be even more fresher in your mind.

Ø How do you study for quizzes/tests?
I am still stuck in the high school way of studying, a.k.a. study the night before or don't study at all. I know it's a bad thing, but I am starting to study everyday. Hopefully doing this will help me do better on quizzes and tests.

Ø What do you have trouble with on quizzes/tests?
I usually have trouble with the way questions are worded and what words are in the questions. It gets hard for me because I studied the material in a certain way, but on the quizzes and tests they are worded differently. I also have a hard time remembering the material that I studied.

*Please go to the website listed below, which is a "Letter to McDonald's" from a former employee. Read it and write at least a paragraph reaction on your Blog site.

http://www.aboutmyjob.com/main.php3?action=displayarticle&artid=3141

I give credit to the person that wrote this to McDonald's. Many people go in to McDonald's to order their food, and not realize what is going on in the back. This letter showed everything. I was disgusted when they told him to pick up the spatula from the floor and just wipe with a paper towel and not wash it. I got grossed out. Many things that he talked about in this letter were unsanitary. I think it is wrong of how the managers treat all the other workers. I don't think it is really fair either, like how the guy that wrote this said. I was also grossed out how he said they cleaned RIGHT before the health inspectors came. After reading this letter, I would never want to work there. This letter showed what goes on in McDonald's.

Ø Reiterate a term or concept you learned in Anatomy this week.
What i found out in Anatomy that was pretty cool is that the thoracic look like moose, and the lumbar look like giraffe.. or it could be opposite. But I found that very interesting yet helpful. I was at the chiropractor today looking at the spine display and looking at them. =)

Ø List a few pleasant events that happened during your first weeks at NMU.
I didn't really do much here at NMU, because I go school and go home, but I did meet new people and talked to new people. I'm not very good with that but I am surprised with myself.

Ø Where do you want to be (academically) in six months?
Academically I would want my grades to be good. I didn't do too good on my quizzes the past two weeks so hopefully I can be doing better on those and keeping my grades up high.

Ø List habits you already possess that make you successful in college.
Some habits I have are taking notes, studying every night, and doing my homework every night. Doing those made me successful in high school, so hopefully they make me successful in college.

Ø List habits (timewasters?) you can change or modify, or need to lose.
Some timewasters I have are that I like to wait til later to do my homework. I really need to change that because I end of going to bed late and it doesn't give me much time to do homework. I also like to watch tv, talk online, or text message people. I also like to go hang out with my friends rather than be doing homework.

Ø Explain how you approach studying your a) textbook and b) notes.
When I study my textbook, I read and highlight the main points. When I go and study, i'm just studying what I highlighted, not the whole chapter. When I study my notes, I read them over and over to help me memorize what information I have in them.

Ø Explain how you determine what to write down in notes during lectures.
I write down the main points of what is being lectured. Also, when the professors are lecturing, and go through each thing, I write down each thing and write down what they are and what they do, for example, Human Anatomy.

Ø FAST FOOD NATION:
Ø Watch this short 1980’s McDonald’s commercial. McD’s reps have actually claimed they do not target children in their ads.. Pay attention to the tagline: “The Hamburglar is very clever and very sneaky!” Why is this ironic?
In my opinion, I believe that line is ironic because I believe McDonald's is very clever on how they advertise and very sneaky on not saying what they put in their food.

Ø Over the last several decades, fast food companies have aggressively targeted children in their marketing efforts. Should advertisers be permitted to target children who lack the sophistication to make informed decisions and are essentially being lured into eating high fat, high calorie food through toys and cute corporate mascots?
I believe they shouldn't be permitted because younger children don't really understand things clearly at their age, and they just go I wantI want rather than thinking about what they want.

Ø List your own quote, favorite saying, song, or other expression of your feelings today.
I don't really have any quotes for how I am feeling today. I am kind of having a bad day today because I don't feel too good. When I don't feel good, nothing goes right.

Ø Now that you made it to NMU – why are you here?
I am here at NMU because I am pursuing a career in Radiology. I would like to be an x-ray tech or work in ultrasound.

Ø How did you choose this school?
It was the only school close to home that I would like. I did not want to move far away from home. I would have the worst case of homesickness and I didn't want to leave the beautiful scenery.

Ø List initial observations of your new environment.
NMU is so beautiful. I love the scenery. It is actually a big school, to me at least. I am used to the weather changes from going hot to cold to hot, so it's no big deal to me. But it is beautiful here.

Ø List initial observations of your classes.
It is really weird not having to be at school everyday, in the same class, the same hour every day of the week. It also scared me because some of my classes are HUGE! My Human Anatomy class has at least 200 people in it, and my other classes are kind of big too. I am not used to having more than 20 in my class.

Ø What observations have you made about other students?
There are a lot of students. They are also all very nice. It is really cool meeting new people, seeing where everyone is from. Sometimes, you assume that just because someone is from another state, that they are different. But getting to know new people from out of Michigan, we are all the same.

Ø About your instructors?
All the instructors here are really nice. Even though i have a teacher I cannot understand and another teacher that does not teach well, they are all very nice.

Ø What do you think will be your biggest challenge(s) academically this semester?
I believe my biggest challenge this year is to not take college like I did high school. I always waited last minute to study and then did not do good on my quizzes or tests. Studying a couple days before is going to be a challenge. If I don't study long enough, I am going to do poorly.

Ø Finally, name one goal (personal, academic, etc..) you have for yourself next week.
My goal is going to be study hard for my quizzes that I have this week. I did not do so good on my last weeks quizzes and I want to try and do better.
