BLOG #12 – FINAL BLOG

My parting words to you all:

"Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out & loudly proclaiming ‘WOW! What a ride’!"

This epitaph is on my Dad’s gravestone and I live by it because life is just too short to not do all of the awesome things you have your heart set on doing. (CARPE DIEM is my second favorite motto..)

Reflect back on this semester.

*Have you met anyone new who is important to you? Have you rekindled any old friendships that have made you stronger?
i lost all my friends once college came, we all rarely talk. so i really haven't rekindled any old friendships. i did make a friendship with a person who i hope we still can crack the same jokes once next semester comes around.

*Have you experienced any major changes academically or personally?
academically-i turned out that it is really hard for me to study and do good in college. my grades in highschool were amazing. my grades from fall semester aren't really that good. personally- i became less shy and now know how to approach people and make new friends.

*What is your one BEST or FAVORITE memory of this semester?
the hula dancing is my favorite memory.

*How will you live your life to the fullest?
do the things that i have been wanting to do for a long time and do things that i would have never tried.

A parting quote from Fast Food Nation:

“Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food..Pull open the glass door, feel the rush of cool air, walk inside, get in line, and look around you, look at the kids working in the kitchen, at the customers in their seats, at the ads for the latest toys, study the backlit color photographs above the counter, think about where the food came from, about how and where it was made, about what is set in motion by every single fast food purchase, the ripple effect near and far, think about it. Then place your order. Or turn and walk out the door. It’s not too late. Even in this fast food nation, you can still have it your way.” (Schlosser, 270)

“Seek first to understand, then to be understood.” –Stephen Covey

1) Reflect upon what you read in Chapter 11 of Thriving in College. What does this quote mean to you or how can you apply it to your life?
before you speak, think about what you are going to say in order for people to understand what you are saying better. if you don't think before you say something, it will all come out really fast and not make sense and the people you are talking to will not understand.

2) (Refer to page 380 of the text):
Are you a “Crisis Tickler,” “Withholder,” “Irritator,” “Blamer,” or “Gunnysacker?” Explain.
i am a withholder because i do not like to deal with things. if someone is yelling at me i get really angry and dont want to deal with them so i just walk away from them or leave the room.

"Who are the people in your life that you tend to turn to for social support when you are experiencing stress or need personal encouragement?"
-sometimes i really do not turn to people when i am stressed, but when i do its either my mom, my brothers girlfriend or my friends. My brothers girlfriend and my friends know what i am going through since they are all also in college. I sometimes also turn to my brother since we are close. All of them give me encouragement and help me to figure what i can do to reduce my stress or we find something else to talk about to relieve my stress. I like talking about something else when i am stressed because then i can forget about what is making me stressed. I love to hear jokes and laugh because i feel better.

1) What are you most stressed-out with at the moment? Why? Is your body re-acting to this stress? Devise a plan to deal with it.
-i am most stressed that i have so much homework to do that im falling behind in, and my grades are low and im stressing because my next exams and quizzes i need to do super good in to do better. Im falling behind in homework because when it comes time to do homework, i decide to clean or go hang out with friends, which i need to stop now so i can catch up and finish with good grades. My body is sooooo tired and i just want to sleep everyday because i have been stressed and staying up late (with friends) and trying to do homework. My plan is to do my homework right when i get home, eat, clean, then finish homework and get to bed early. Friends can wait until the weekend.

2) FFN: Chapter 8 / This is a creative writing exercise! Read the following scenario and finish it based on your knowledge after reading Chapter 8.

You are "Raul" and have just immigrated to the American West illegally from Mexico. You brought your wife and two young children with you on a frightening and expensive 4-day journey in the back of a beat-up truck to arrive in Texas. You can't find work there and Border Patrol is cracking down, so you decide to migrate north a bit where you have relatives in Colorado. You are hired on the spot by ConAgra to work in one of their "beef processing" plants.

-Describe in sensory detail your place of employment. (What's it look like, what is going on, how do people act, what do you wear, what is your job? etc..)
*looks like-big building with a lot of machinery
*going on-many people, illegal immigrants, doing there job quickly and dangerously
*people acting- they are working really fast at their job, not reacting to how dangerous the machine or tools they are working with
*wearing-clothes i normally wear, there is no protective equipment i can wear
*job-taking the meat and slicing them up really fast with sharp knives
-How much $$$ do you earn?
*i only make $1 a day
-How do your days go? What are your work hours and what do you do after work?
*i work 12 hour shifts each day cutting up the meat, and after work i go home to my family and sleep so i can wake up early in the morning to go back to work
-Where do you live, what do you live in, how is your quality of life?
* we live in a little tiny old looking house about an hour away from the factory, and the quality of life is poor, we barley have anything in our home and there is barely no food

blog #8

from ashleys blog:

-How do you think you have changed acedemically since the beginning of this school year?

i am not doing too well academically. i am not doing really good in human anatomy and its bringing my gpa down, and i might drop it and start fresh next semester. algebra is kind of ehhh and so are my other classes. i am going to try and study hard for the rest of the semester and to bring those grades up.

-Do you believe you are working to your full ablility in all of your classes?
i am not working to my full ability in all of my classes. i wish i would have worked harder in all of my classes at the beginning of the semester because i am struggling to bring my grades up. i really wish i could start all over fresh in my classes, especially human anatomy because i wasted money for that class and have to retake it. but i am going to try my hardest in all of my classes starting... now.

blog #7

1) Post your favorite lyrics, poem, or quote for this week.
"people are going to try and bring you down, be strong"- i don't know how the real one goes, but that is how i say it.

2) Develop two reflection questions that you would ask your students at this point in the course if you were a UN100 Professor.
-how has college changed your life?
-are you still considering the career you have chosen at the beginning of the semester or are you thinking of something else?

3) What are you passionate about? Why?
i am passionate about my family because i love them so much and they are there for me when i need help and they mean everything to me.

4) How are you going to finance your three years of the Radiology program? If you will be in debt from student loans at the end, calculate roughly how much you will owe upon graduation.
when i get a job, i am going to have that help pay for it along with student loans, and at the beginning of the semester i figured out it will cost me $40,000 total about, but i am going to wait til next year to apply for the program, so adding 2 more semesters to that will raise that amount.

5) Have you changed your mind or do you have any new concerns about your program of study after our guest speakers today (Dr. Foley & Joanne)? Are you thinking of a different major or are you dead set on Radiology? What behavior(s) will you maybe have to change in order to keep up with and make the cut?
i wish that i would have heard their speech at the beginning of the semester because i would have been trying even harder at my classes. i was thinking of doing a different career but i am not really sure just yet. in order to make the cut i am going to need to try wayyyy harder at school and raising my grades up these next weeks before final exams.

6) FAST FOOD NATION (You should be reading through Chapter 7 at this point)

Reflect upon the opening lines of Chapter 7:

"You can smell Greeley, Colorado, long before you can see it. The smell is hard to forget but not easy to describe, a combination of live animals, manure, and dead animals being rendered into dog food."
i would not like to live or even travel through that town because i would not like that smell at all.

-Have you ever read The Jungle by Upton Sinclair? If so, how does it relate to FFN?
i have not read THE JUNGLE, but how it relates is that workers got hurt at food industries in the book the jungle, just how workers are getting hurt in food packing industries today.

-How high is the employee turnover rate in the meat industry and why don't the packing plants see this as a problem?
meat industries have gone through so many employees and packing plants are not seeing this as a problem because they are making money no matter what.

We discussed captive supplies of cattle versus regular farming. Reflect upon this quote from page 150:

"To supply the beef slaughterhouse, ConAgra operates a pair of enormous feedlots. Each of them can hold up to one hundred thousand head of cattle..During the three months before slaughter, they eat grain..The grain fattens the cattle quickly, aided by the anabolic steroids implanted in their ear."

-Do you think that these animals' emotions (fears, stress, anger) affect the meat we eat derived from them? How?
i believe that when the animals are stressed, anger, or scared, it toughens up the meat, because if they are like that when they are getting killed, their muscles are tensed up because they are scared.

-How do you feel about eating steroids via consumption of "USDA Inspected" beef?
i know you can't really taste them even though it is a little disgusting to think about, but this is not going to change no matter what.

I probably grossed you out - sorry guys, but knowledge is power! If you still don't see the connection between this course and Fast Food Nation -- let me know. Most of you are going into health professions and will be dealing with epidemics of cancer, diabetes, heart disease etc.. mostly based on the American sedentary and processed-food lifestyle. I am hoping you are thinking more critically about everything at this point.

2) Reflect upon one tactic we discussed in class this week concerning Procrastination, Study Habits, Retainment, or Test-Taking/Anxiety. (Choose something that you will probably try and discuss why).
For the test-taking/anxiety, i get reallllly nervous when it comes to exam or quiz time.. and I forget right away. For my next exams or quizzes, I'm going to try not let the other people around me bother me. If I see people get done before me, I'm going to try to block them out and realize.. just take your time... and take big deep breaths.
